From nearly the beginning of the Disciples movement in the early 1800s African-Americans have been present and active as participants and leaders. Today, the Disciples of Christ as a denomination is a leader in anti-racism and pro-reconciliation efforts. This work is supported nationally by Reconciliation Ministry.
This anti-racism and pro-reconciliation initiative among Disciples was created to bring to light God’s vision of a beloved community. It encourages the church to hear the voices of its racial and ethnic communities that were once marginalized, drawing upon their wisdom and leadership for guidance. This initiative challenges the church to engage in discernment, prayer, study, reflection, dialogue, and fellowship. The ultimate purpose is to renew and enhance the church’s spiritual foundation, fostering a community committed to advancing justice and salvation throughout the world.
The Oregon-Southwest Idaho Region supports and engages reconciliation and antiracism, especially as we are growing as a Region by adding new congregations who bring non-Eurocentric traditions and heritages to our fellowship.
The Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation Team is charged with helping our region engage in this important work. They are:
